Obesity Management

At the Clinical Research Institute of Ohio (CRIOH) in Westlake, OH, we focus on helping individuals manage obesity through evidence-based strategies and access to innovative research. Our obesity management program integrates lifestyle modification, clinical evaluation, and investigational treatments designed to support sustainable weight loss and improve overall metabolic health.

Obesity often contributes to other chronic conditions such as fatty liver disease and cardiovascular problems. By combining patient care with active clinical trials, CRIOH aims to identify new therapies that reduce the burden of obesity and its related complications.

Obesity Management at CRIOH

Obesity is a complex medical condition that occurs when excess body fat affects health and increases the risk of metabolic disorders. Waist circumference is also assessed since abdominal fat is closely linked to higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

Our comprehensive treatment approach includes:

Lifestyle Modifications

Lifestyle management is the foundation of obesity treatment.

  • Dietary changes: Focus on balanced meals with reduced calorie intake, emphasizing whole foods, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables while limiting processed foods and sugary beverages.
  • Physical activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week.
  • Sleep and stress management: Maintain 7–9 hours of quality sleep and use mindfulness or behavioral strategies to manage stress.
  • Behavioral therapy: CRIOH encourages patients to work with dietitians or health professionals to develop long-term healthy habits.

Medications

Apart from lifestyle modification and more often in conjunction with them, prescription medications may be used. Some of the common options include:

  • Orlistat
  • Phentermine-topiramate
  • Naltrexone-bupropion
  • Liraglutide
  • Semaglutide
  • Tirzepatide

These medications help with appetite control, fat absorption reduction, and improved metabolic regulation. Patients may qualify for CRIOH’s obesity clinical trials studying the safety and efficacy of new and combination therapies targeting weight loss and metabolic balance.

Endoscopic Interventions

For certain patients, minimally invasive procedures such as gastric balloon placement or endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty may be considered. These techniques reduce stomach volume and promote earlier satiety without requiring surgery.

Bariatric Surgery

In cases of severe obesity or when conservative methods have not been successful, bariatric surgery such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy may be recommended. While CRIOH does not perform bariatric surgeries on-site, we can refer eligible patients to appropriate bariatric surgeons for further evaluation and treatment.

Ongoing Support

Effective obesity management requires consistent follow-up and support. CRIOH ensures patients receive continued monitoring, education, and resources to maintain long-term results and prevent relapses.

Obesity Clinical Trials

CRIOH conducts ongoing research to evaluate new therapies for obesity and metabolic disorders. These studies focus on improving weight loss outcomes, enhancing energy metabolism, and addressing obesity-related complications such as fatty liver disease and insulin resistance.

Participants in our trials receive comprehensive care from a dedicated team of physicians, coordinators, and dietitians who monitor progress throughout the study. Eligible individuals may receive investigational treatments, dietary counseling, and regular health assessments at no cost.
